Take a look around and just picture this — Kutafiya Tower used to be surrounded by the Neglinnaya River. Five hundred years back, this building was linked to Trinity Tower with a drawbridge. When enemies attacked, they’d raise the bridge, making it impossible to breach the Kremlin’s grounds. Kutafiya Tower even used to be a 200-ruble banknote, but that version eventually got out from the usage.

Later on, the Neglinnaya River, encircling Kutafiya Tower, was hidden into an underground pipe, and the surface was adorned with Alexander Garden. Around Moscow, there are about 70 small rivers and streams, amounting to over 160 kilometers in total length. Most of them are hidden under the ground.

And hey, fun fact — you could actually make your way from Moscow all the way to the Arctic Ocean via the water route.
